Storage systems and telecommunications are stored in a facility called a data center or data centre. Also called a server farm, a data center houses computer systems, and its related components. The data center was perfected in the late 90s, during the dot com boom days.
But it actually originated during the earliest days of the computer. As you know, early versions of the computer were enormous and consumed a lot of space. The difficulty of operating and maintaining these machines led people to put into practice of placing them in dedicated rooms.
These early versions of the computer were not only huge but they were extremely expensive, and a lot of them were used by the military functions or imperative business ventures. A dedicated server room lets institutions and businesses manage access to the machine.
Another reason that led to using separate computer rooms was the necessity for the systems to stay cool. Since they used a lot of power, computer systems in the early computer era had the tendency to overheat. The dedicated rooms allowed people to control the climate in order to minimize the overheating.
Massive amounts of connecting cables were required by these computers. These cables needed to be well arranged which showed the way for some of the data center principles today to be created. Frames, stands or racks were made to mount the equipment and of course the cable trays were too.
The microcomputer era came in the 1980, when the computer industry experienced its boom. During this boom, many computers were installed all over and they didn’t put too much consideration on the operating and environmental necessities of the computers.
Information was difficult to organize so data loss was a main concern. IT (Information Technology) teams were created. The main purpose of this was to install and maintain the microcomputers. But the computer industry still needed a more suitable solution.
The information technology systems soon demanded a more controlled environment for the systems as it was too complex. A recognized standard was made in the 90s, and this was called client-server networking. And soon the systems’ servers found a place in the dedicated server rooms from the early computers.
During this time, the term “data center or data centre” became famous. To put it simple, data centers are specially designed rooms dedicated to the purpose of housing the computers. It’s a physical storage place for a computer network’s critical systems. It is in charge for the running of the many day to day central services like file backup and restore, backup power supplies, security applications, and air condition. It’s a computer system’s most vital and vulnerable component.
Examples of companies with data centers are banks or financial institutions.
These institutions data centers will have a mainframe which stores the account information of the customers and other data. Universities also have data centers which contain not just the personal information of the universities students and employees, but also delicate information on their buildings, new projects, and history (both physical and intellectual).
Data centers for these companies contain critical information about their continued operation so data can’t be lost.
